Xbox 360 sets a new pace for digital entertainment. More than just a cutting-edge game system, Xbox 360 also integrates high-definition video, DVD movie playback, digital music, photos, and online connectivity into one sleek, small tower.

About the Xbox 360 Hardware

Xbox 360 console core, shown with separately sold wireless controller, is a sleek, customizable gaming and entertainment system. Xbox 360 is much smaller than its predecessor–it measures approximately 3.3 by 12.2 by 10.2 inches and weighs 7.7 lbs. It’s powered by custom IBM PowerPC-based CPU with three symmetrical cores each running at 3.2 GHz. It also carries a custom ATI graphics processor with 10 MB of embedded DRAM. This is powerful enough to draw 500 million triangles per second. In other words, it makes for great looking games on standard TVs, and even better looking ones on HDTV sets thanks to built-in support for HDTV (720p/1080i/1080p) resolutions.

The unit has a 12x dual-layer DVD-ROM drive, which plays both the game media and progressive-scan DVD movies right out of the box (the optional Media Remote is sold separately). For game-save and media storage, users can choose between 64MB flash Memory Unit, or a detachable and upgradeable 20GB hard drive (sold seperately). Along with storing files, the hard drive will make the Xbox 360 backward-compatible with part of the existing Xbox game library.

Xbox 360 console core uses a refined button layout for its controllers. Back and Start buttons sit at the center of the controller and between them is a new Xbox Guide button, which instantly takes the user to the Xbox 360 user “Dashboard” interface. From there, they can check for friend’s online, access personal digital content like photos songs, and more. The black and white buttons of the first Xbox controllers have been replaced with new shoulder buttons placed above the left and right triggers. The Xbox 360 can accommodate up to four wireless controllers and has three USB 2.0 slots to use for wired controllers or for streaming your digital media from digital cameras, MP3 players, and any Windows XP-based PC.

Xbox 360 can manage your games, your online friends, and your personal digital library.

About Xbox 360 Games and Media
All Xbox 360 titles can be played in either standard or high-definition resolution in 16:9 widescreen, with anti-aliasing for smoother graphics. Game designers will be able to take advantage of the system’s multi-channel surround sound. The Xbox 360′s digital media allows users to supplement any game’s music from tracks in their own personal library.

About Xbox Live
A built-in Ethernet port allows users to connect their system to a broadband connection for access to the new Xbox Live service. The included Silver membership lets anyone create a Gamertag and gamer card to express your online identity, chat live with voice chat (separately sold headset required), and connect to the Xbox Live Marketplace to buy and download expansions, maps, and other digital goodies for your games. Upgrading to a Gold membership adds to that online competition, game stats, demos and video chat/messaging. The separately sold wireless network adapter supports the common 802.11a, -b, and -g standards.

Connect to a TV

There are two major revisions of the Xbox High Definition AV pack:

  • The original Xbox HDTV AV pack is a black box with a cable that connects to the Xbox console’s AV port. The box has individual inputs for component video, stereo audio, and digital audio. You will have to provide your own component AV, stereo audio, or digital audio cabling to connect from the box to your television. This AV pack is no longer sold.
  • The newer version has no black box. It is a long cable that plugs into the AV port of the Xbox console and ends in a component cables and stereo audio cables. The digital audio port is located on the end of the cable that plugs into the Xbox console’s AV port. You will have to provide your own digital audio cabling to connect from the digital audio port to your television.

Use the Xbox HD cable AV Pack to connect the Xbox console to the component AV inputs of a TV that has component inputs, such as a High Definition TV (HDTV). To do this:

  1. Verify that you have turned off the Xbox console.
  2. Connect the Xbox AV connector to the AV port on the Xbox console.
  3. If you have the original High Definition AV Pack, connect the component AV cable connectors to the AV pack and to the component video input on your TV.
If you have the newer High Definition AV Pack, connect the component AV cable connectors to the component video input on your TV.
  4. If you have the original xbox HD cable AV Pack, connect the left and the right audio connectors to the AV pack and to the audio input on your TV.
If you have the newer High Definition AV Pack, connect the left and the right audio connectors to the audio input on your TV.
  5. Set the appropriate video input for your TV to display Xbox games. Common names for video input include Input Select, AUX, Line In, Line, In, Input, Source, Video 1, and EXT. For more information about video input, see your TV manual.
  6. For high-definition TVs, you must select the appropriate video settings for the Xbox video game system. To do this:

a. Turn on your Xbox console without a disc in the disc tray.

b. On the Main screen, press the directional pad (D-pad) up or down to select Settings, and then press the A button.

c. On the Settings screen, press the D-pad up or down to select Video, and then press the A button.

d. On the Video screen, press the D-pad up or down to select the correct high-definitionthen press the A button.

See your TV’s documentation for the appropriate setting. The Xbox console provides the following selections: 480p, 720p, or 1080i. When you make this selection, you receive the following message:

Does your HDTV support selected resolution?
If your TV supports the resolution that you selected, press the D-pad left or right to select Yes, and then press the A button.

Connect to a Digital AV System

If your receiver has a digital audio input, you can connect to digital audio instead of to the standard left and right audio input.

To do this, connect the digital audio cable connectors to the digital audio output of the AV pack and to the digital audio input of your receiver.

Auto-Selection of widescreen

When you use the xbox HD cable AV pack in widescreen (16:9) ratio while displaying in 480p, 720p, or 1080i mode, note that you may have to manually adjust your television to fit the Xbox display to the shape of the screen.

At the time the Xbox video game system was developed, there was not an established standard for alerting a monitor to a 480p wide-screen mode switch. Therefore, the console does not send a mode-switch signal while outputting in 480p, 720p, or 1080i mode. The console does send such a mode-switch signal while in 480i mode, as an established signal standard did exist for this mode when the Xbox video game system was developed.
